Institutes must come forward for development of society: Anandiben Patel, Governor

On completing 175 years of establishing IIT Roorkee University, governor, UP, Anandiben Patel duly inaugurated a year-long celebration at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan on Saturday. The chain of events began with the inauguration of a two-day global meet program, ‘Ullas Global Thomso 175’, organized by the IIT Roorkee Alumni Association (IITRAA), Lucknow chapter.

Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel said youth could bring change in any country or society, and the best use of technology is to benefit the person on the last rung of the society.

Addressing the inaugural session, the governor said that Roorkee University students are outshining the country’s name on the world stage today. This institute is one of the best engineering institutes in the country and has played an essential role in building the country’s future.

Addressing the inaugural function as the chief guest of the global meet program ‘Ullas Global Thomso 175’ organized by IIT Roorkee Alumni Association, Lucknow Chapter on Saturday, the governor said that alumni from IIT Roorkee have earned a name in different parts of the world. She said that educational institutions should also work outside the campus for society. “By adopting anganwadi centers or primary schools or villages, the infrastructure development can be done. Also, at individual levels, teachers can come forward to doing the same,” said the governor.

She said the alumni of this institute who are capable should also contribute time and come forward to uplift the weaker sections of society.

Lt. Gen. (Retd) Vishwambhar Singh, President, IITRAA, DS Panwar, secretary IITRAA. Ajay Srivastava, secretary IITRAA, Lucknow Chapter, also attended the inaugural function.

Earlier, Anuj Varshney, president of IIT Roorkee Alumni Association, Lucknow chapter, said that today “if our institute is discussed among the best engineering institutes of the world, it is because we get the best teachers in our institute.”

The first day began with the two technical sessions held. Engineer (MD, Lucknow Metro, Kumar Keshav; DRM Lucknow engineer, Suresh Sapra and PWD superintendent engineer Pavan Varma attended the sessions as special speakers, and Architect Vipul Varshney was a moderator.

There were also two brainstorming sessions. While the first session was on ‘the use of drones and robotics technology in social life, the second session was on ‘ushering life to the 22nd century.

Alumni of IIT Roorkee have made a significant contribution in giving the right direction and speed to the country’s development, said deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak on Sunday. He was addressing the concluding session of the two-day global meet “Ullas Thomso 175” organized by IIT Roorkee Alumni Association, Lucknow Chapter, at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan to mark the completion of 175 years of the institution.

Pathak said, “Lucknow’s metro rail service is a living example as it has been built under the guidance of engineers from IIT Roorkee. Today Lucknow Metro has become one of the best metro rail services in the world.”

The deputy CM said the state government would help in whatever cooperation would be needed on the proposals and suggestions coming from IIT Roorkee.

Anuj Varshney, president of IIT Roorkee Alumni Association, Lucknow Chapter, said, “In the last two days, we alumni have discussed many issues regarding the planned development of the state. We are always ready to share our knowledge with the government for development.”

Members also appreciated the presentation of “Dastaangoi” (Urdu oral storytelling art form) by Himanshu Bajpai. The alumni of IIT Roorkee also enjoyed the “Heritage Walk.”
